When it comes to dairy farming, feed is everything. But many farmers still mix everything into the trough without realising that poor feed management is silently affecting their cows’ health and milk production.
Peter Mubiru, a veterinary doctor, says sorting cow feeds is not just a routine; it is a critical step in ensuring animals receive the right nutrients in the right amounts.
“When feeds are not properly sorted, cows may selectively eat only the tasty parts and leave the rest. This leads to nutritional imbalance, which results in poor milk yield, reproductive issues, or even bloating,” he explains.
Sabastian Ngambwa has made feed sorting a daily priority.
“I separate silage, hay, and concentrates. I also make sure that mineral blocks are placed away from moist feed so they don’t dissolve unnecessarily,” he says.
According to Ngambwa, it’s not costly, but it requires attention to detail. He uses feed separators and a consistent feeding schedule to prevent cows from overeating starch-rich feeds or ignoring roughage, which is essential for digestion.
Tereza Nsabimaana, a dairy farmer shares her experience, “Before I started sorting feeds, my cows had weight issues and inconsistent milk flow. But after learning the technique from a farmer training, I saw a big improvement. Now, I prepare feeds in separate sections and monitor consumption closely.”
Sorted feeding reduces wastage, improves digestion, and helps with monitoring intake per cow. It also keeps the barn clean and reduces feed contamination.
Ultimately, sorting your cows’ feeds is about discipline and care. It’s a small change, but it can make a big difference in dairy profitability, animal health, and farm hygiene. Every farmer aiming for consistent productivity should embrace this practice.
