How To Keep Pumpkins From Rotting

Pumpkin rotting in the garden is a common and frustrating problem for many farmers.

Whether caused by poor soil drainage, pests, or fungal infections, rot can wipe out an entire crop just when the fruits are nearing maturity. But with the right preventive practices, you can reduce losses and harvest healthy, market-ready pumpkins.

Seperanza Kenyena, a farmer from Kabingo village in Isingiro district, says pumpkin rot often starts with poor field hygiene and overcrowded plants.

“I make sure to space my plants well and weed regularly. This improves air circulation and reduces moisture build-up that causes rot,” she says.

Brenda Tusiime, the founder of Mema Agro-Organic Processors and a commercial pumpkin farmer, advises choosing raised, well-drained fields.

“Pumpkins rot when they sit on wet soil for long. I mulch under the fruits with dry grass or banana leaves so they don’t touch the ground directly,” she explains.

Tusiime also emphasises regular inspection. “Once I spot any signs of softening, mold, or pest damage, I remove the affected fruit immediately to protect others.”

Isma Kabuye, a pumpkin trader, says rotting pumpkins fetch no value in the market.

“I encourage farmers I work with to harvest only when the fruits are fully mature and dry. If they harvest too early or when it’s wet, the pumpkins spoil quickly.”

Agronomists also recommend watering pumpkins at the base rather than sprinkling water on leaves and fruits, which can encourage fungal infections. A balanced fertiliser and proper spacing reduce fruit stress, making them less prone to rot.

Healthy pumpkins start with clean gardens, dry conditions, and close monitoring. Farmers who apply these practices are more likely to enjoy high yields and better profits at harvest.
