How To Get Rid Of Cabbage Worms And Aphids

Cabbage farming is a rewarding venture, especially in highland and mid-altitude areas. However, many farmers face major setbacks when pests like worms and aphids invade their gardens.

These tiny but destructive insects feed on cabbage leaves, causing holes, stunted growth, and even total crop failure if not properly managed. But with the right knowledge and consistent care, these pests can be controlled effectively.

Isaac Malinga, a cabbage farmer from Kapchorwa, says he once lost nearly half an acre of cabbage to worms because he delayed action.

“I learned the hard way that you must scout your garden regularly. Now I check my cabbages every two days, especially under the leaves where worms and aphids hide. Once I notice early signs, I apply organic sprays made from neem leaves or ash mixed with soap and water, which helps keep the pests away,” he explains.

Robert Ayo, a cabbage farmer from Zirobwe, says early planting and proper spacing have helped him reduce pest pressure.

“I avoid planting during seasons when pest pressure is high, like in long dry spells. I also use crop rotation, especially avoiding planting cabbage after tomatoes or sukuma wiki, which also attract aphids,” he says.

Allan Nsubuga, an agronomist, explains that worms, mainly diamondback moth larvae, and aphids can be controlled through integrated pest management.

“Farmers should combine cultural, biological, and chemical methods. Encourage natural predators like ladybirds, use traps, and only apply chemical pesticides when infestation is severe. Overuse of chemicals can lead to resistance,” he warns.

Regular monitoring, clean farming practices, and informed pest control methods are key. With these measures, farmers can protect their cabbages, reduce losses, and enjoy healthy harvests.
