Pigeon pea is gaining recognition in Uganda for its multiple benefits.

Beyond being a food crop, it is a resilient legume with medicinal, nutritional, and economic value.

As more farmers seek climate-smart alternatives, pigeon pea is emerging as a reliable option due to its ability to withstand drought, enrich soil, and provide good returns.

Evanice Manyiraho, an experienced herbal farmer from Kicwamba in Kabarole district, grows pigeon peas not just for food but for health purposes.

“We use pigeon pea leaves in herbal preparations to treat respiratory problems and manage blood sugar levels. It’s a dual-purpose crop, both food and medicine,” she says.

She adds that the crop requires minimal attention, thrives in poor soils, and is ready to harvest within 4–6 months.

Twaha Kakooza, the director of Shatwa herbal organic and a medicinal plant expert, says pigeon pea is highly beneficial for organic farming systems.

“It fixes nitrogen in the soil, improves soil fertility, and reduces the need for synthetic fertilisers. Farmers practising intercropping can benefit by combining pigeon pea with crops like maize and cassava,” he explains.

He encourages farmers to dry and store pigeon peas properly to maintain their nutritional and market value.

Martin Mutegeki, a trader in Fort Portal town, says the market for pigeon peas is growing both locally and in regional markets such as South Sudan and Kenya.

“A kilogramme goes for between sh4,000–sh5,500 depending on the season. There is demand from herbal processors, and local households,” he notes.

With minimal input, good market prices, and added health benefits, pigeon pea growing offers farmers a sustainable income-generating opportunity.

Experts agree, with proper drying, storage, and market linkage, pigeon pea can transform livelihoods.
