Turkey Farming: Profitable, Sustainable Business

Wilson Nkurunziza, a famous turkey farmer from Lwensama village in Mubende district, has mastered the art of free-range turkey rearing.

Every evening, he carefully counts his birds to ensure none are missing, his routine driven by the ever-present threat of disease and wild animal attacks.

Like many other farmers, Nkurunziza prefers free-range systems for their cost-effectiveness and natural feeding benefits. However, this method requires careful management to avoid losses.

David Ahaisibwe, a seasoned farmer from Kikonge village in Kabarole district, agrees.

“Free-range turkeys are healthy, but they must be protected from predators like wild dogs, mongooses, and snakes, which are common in rural areas,” he says.

According to Ahaisibwe, one effective strategy is constructing simple shelters made of poles and iron sheets, where turkeys can safely roost at night.

He also recommends fencing off a portion of land to limit movement and prevent easy access by predators.

To protect turkeys from diseases, both farmers emphasise routine vaccination, regular deworming, and maintaining hygiene in feeding areas.

“Most turkey deaths occur due to owl cholera, fowl pox, histomoniasis (blackhead disease), and hemorrhagic enteritis, Newcastle disease, coccidiosis, or parasitic worms,” Nkurunziza warns.

He advises farmers to consult veterinary officers to schedule proper vaccinations and to avoid overcrowding, which increases the risk of disease spread.

Feeding turkeys a balanced diet with supplements like crushed maize, greens, and clean water also boosts their immunity. Farmers are encouraged to isolate sick birds immediately and always clean water troughs and feeding containers.

Ultimately, successful turkey rearing on a free-range system is about constant vigilance, cleanliness, and simple but strategic housing solutions.

As more farmers like Nkurunziza and Ahaisibwe adopt these methods, they are proving that with the right practices, turkey farming can be both profitable and sustainable.
