Garden peas are a nutritious and profitable crop that can thrive in many parts of Uganda. Known for their sweet taste and versatility in cooking, they are a favourite for both home consumption and commercial markets.
With proper care and pest control, they can provide farmers with excellent yields in just a few months.
Isaac Malinga, a farmer from Kapchorwa, explains that garden peas prefer cool conditions and fertile, well-drained soils.
“We plant them at the start of the rainy season to take advantage of natural moisture,” he says.
According to Malinga, seeds are sown directly into the soil, with spacing of about 5cm between plants and 50cm between rows. They also need support, like sticks or trellises, to climb.
He adds that timely weeding and mulching help maintain soil moisture and keep the crop healthy.
Pest control is essential for successful pea farming. Common threats include aphids, cutworms, and pod borers. “I use organic methods like neem sprays and encourage beneficial insects to control pests naturally,” Malinga notes.
“Proper field hygiene, crop rotation, and avoiding overcrowding also reduce pest attacks.”
At the consumer end, Deborah Namale, who owns a restaurant, says garden peas are a kitchen favourite because they cook quickly and blend well with different dishes.
“They are tender, nutritious, and full of flavour, whether in stews, rice dishes, or salads,” she says.
Gladys Nakamya, a trader at Kawempe market, confirms their popularity. “They sell fast, especially when fresh and green. Customers love them for their taste and health benefits,” she says.
With good planting practices and effective pest management, garden peas can be a rewarding crop for farmers while providing a steady supply of healthy, delicious food for Ugandan households.
