Hood Kiwana Kasirye, the dairy expert and director of Kasirye breeders, explains that sand play areas are not merely for entertainment; they are vital for healthy growth.
These spaces allow calves to exercise safely, develop strong muscles and bones, and build the social skills they need to thrive in a herd.
“Calves need safe, soft surfaces to run, jump, and roll. Sand provides cushioning for their joints and hooves, reducing the risk of injuries,” Kasirye explains.
He notes that when calves have dedicated play zones, they show stronger growth rates, improved coordination, and healthier social behaviours.
“Play strengthens muscles and bones while teaching calves how to interact within a herd,” he adds.
Peter Mubiru, a veterinary doctor, explains that stress reduction is a major benefit.
“Animals kept in confined or hard-surfaced areas often develop behavioural issues or stress-related illnesses. Sand play areas allow natural behaviours like digging, stretching, and social play, which contribute to overall immunity and wellbeing,” he says.
Mubiru also points out that these zones can reduce disease spread. Sand drains quickly and does not retain moisture like mud, lowering the risk of hoof infections or bacterial growth.
At Kasirye breeders farm, calves are observed daily enjoying short races, playful nudges, and gentle rolling in sand patches.
Farmers who invest in such spaces report calmer herds, fewer injuries, and more robust calves ready to grow into productive adults.
