How To Benefit From Fowl Rearing

Fowl rearing, particularly local chicken or indigenous breeds, has become one of the most profitable yet underutilised agribusiness opportunities in Uganda.

Unlike exotic breeds that require high maintenance and expensive feeds, local fowls are resilient to harsh conditions, require minimal inputs, and fetch competitive prices on the market.

With increasing demand for organic and free-range chicken and eggs, farmers stand to make significant profits if the enterprise is well-managed.

Lwamasaka Nsereko, a resident of Kiwebwa in Wakiso district, has been rearing fowls for over 10 years.

He says that to benefit fully, a farmer must first understand the breeds and their behaviour. “I started with only 15 local hens and two cocks. I built a simple shelter with good ventilation and a raised floor to keep them dry. I made sure to vaccinate against Newcastle and fowl pox,” Nsereko says.

He also says that feeding should not be taken lightly. “I supplement their free-range feeding with maize bran, silverfish powder, and greens. I also give them clean water daily. This ensures faster growth and higher egg production,” he says.

Twaha Kakooza, another farmer from Kayunga, says that proper housing, predator control, and hygiene are key. “I use wire mesh to keep away mongoose and birds of prey. I clean the shelter weekly and use wood ash to control lice and mites,” he explains.

Marketing is also crucial. “I don’t wait for middlemen. I sell directly to restaurants and customers who prefer organic chicken. During festive seasons, I make over sh5 million from just 100 birds,” he says.
