How To Spot A High Milk-yielding Cow

For any dairy farmer, selecting cows that produce high litres of milk is crucial for profitability. But how do you identify such cows before investing? Experts say the signs are visible if you know what to look for.

Peter Mubiru, a veterinary doctor, says high milk producers often have specific physical and genetic traits.

“Look for cows with a large, well-formed udder that is soft and evenly quartered. The teats should be medium-sized and well-placed for easy milking,” he advises.

Mubiru adds that cows with a deep and wide barrel (abdomen) usually have good feed intake, which supports higher milk production.

Sabastian Ngambwa has mastered the art of identifying good milkers.

“I check the cow’s milk records first, how many litres it produces per day and how consistent it is over time,” he explains.

Ngambwa also monitors the cow’s lineage, “Cows from proven high-yielding breeds like Friesians or Jerseys tend to give more milk. I never buy a cow without checking its history.”

He adds that behaviour matters too.

“A calm cow is easier to handle, less stressed, and gives more milk during milking sessions.”

Tereza Nsabimaana, a dairy farmer, says experience taught her what works.

“When I started, I used to go by size, but now I know that udder shape, body condition, and past lactation records are more reliable indicators,” she says.

Nsabimaana also recommends looking at the cow’s appetite, as good feeders tend to produce more milk.

The best way to know a cow that gives good litres of milk is a combination of physical assessment, record analysis, and practical experience. With the right knowledge, farmers can choose wisely and grow their dairy business sustainably.
