Spraying is one of the most important practices in modern farming, whether it’s for pest control, disease management, or fertilising crops.

However, when dealing with large areas of farmland, many farmers struggle to spray effectively and efficiently.

Long hours, inconsistent coverage, and equipment limitations can make the task difficult. However, experienced farmers and professionals are finding better ways to do it.

Martin Kyobe, a professional fumigator, says the first step is choosing the right equipment.

“For large areas, a motorised or knapsack sprayer with a wide nozzle works best. It reduces the number of refills and covers more space in less time,” he explains.

Kyobe also advises spraying early in the morning or late in the evening when winds are calm and temperatures are low.

Twaha Kakooza, a commercial farmer in Kayunga, operates a 30-acre farm with maize and bananas. He invested in a fuel-powered sprayer that he mounts on a trolley.

“This machine saves me time. I can spray five acres in under two hours,” he says.

“I also mix in the right quantities of water and pesticide to avoid waste.”

Joseph Munerya, another commercial farmer from Kapchorwa, emphasises the importance of protective gear.

“We never spray without masks and gloves.”

With the right tools, knowledge, and preparation, spraying wide areas doesn’t have to be a tiring task. It becomes a strategic part of farm management, boosting yields while saving time and effort.
