Quality Piglets, More Profitable Than Pork

For David Ahaisibwe, what began as a small pig-rearing venture has grown into a thriving business built on one key lesson, piglets, not pork, are the true goldmine.

“When I started, I had just one pig,” says Ahaisibwe, a passionate farmer from Kikonge village in Kabarole. “But after a visit to Germany where I saw advanced pig production systems, I realised I had been sitting on untapped potential.”

Inspired, he shifted his focus from selling pork to producing quality piglets, and the results have been remarkable.

Unlike pork, which fetches a fixed market price, high-quality piglets attract consistent demand and better returns.

“People want to start piggery projects every day, but they struggle to find healthy, fast-growing piglets from clean breeding stock. That’s where the opportunity lies”, Ahaisibwe explains.

Today, Ahaisibwe earns more by selling piglets than he ever did through pork sales. Each piglet fetches between sh300,000-sh1.5m depending on age, weight, and breed.

He supplies them to commercial farmers, and institutions across the region.

He attributes his success to good genetics, proper feeding, and strict hygiene practices. “I keep Large White and Landrace breeds, known for fast growth and large litter sizes,” he explains.

His sows produce up to 15 piglets per litter, and he maintains a strict vaccination and deworming schedule to ensure top-quality health.

Samuel Bisegelwa a trader in Matugga agrees that the demand for piglets will only grow as more Ugandans take up commercial farming.

For farmers like Ahaisibwe, focusing on breeding and selling healthy piglets is not just sustainable, it’s a smart business model that pays better and builds long-term reputation.
