The Right Calculations For Hass Avocado Growing

Hass avocado growing is proving to be one of the most lucrative agribusiness ventures in Uganda, but success largely depends on accurate planning and calculations.

Without proper management, farmers risk low yields and missed profit opportunities.

Kennedy Rwaboona, a hass avocado farmer from Kahanda village in Rukiga district, says the first step is understanding spacing and plant population.

“Each acre can accommodate about 70–80 trees when spaced at 7m by 7m. This ensures proper sunlight penetration and healthy growth,” he explains.

According to Gideon Zakke, an agronomist, each mature tree can produce 200–300 fruits per season under good management.

“If a farmer sells each fruit at sh1,000 in the export market, an acre could generate between sh14 million and sh24 million annually. But you must factor in establishment costs, which range from sh3–5 million for seedlings, land preparation, and irrigation,” he notes.

Harriet Kavule, a produce trader, says market timing is key.

“Prices are higher during the off-season, so knowing your harvest calendar helps maximise returns,” she advises.

She adds that quality control, especially for export, is crucial to avoid losses due to rejection.

Farmers are encouraged to calculate not just yield but also production costs, including fertilisers, pruning, pest control, and labour.

A break-even analysis helps determine the number of fruits needed to cover costs before making a profit.

Rwaboona emphasises reinvestment, “Don’t spend all your earnings in the first good season, channel part of it into irrigation, soil improvement, and expansion.”

By combining accurate yield projections, cost analysis, and market research, Hass avocado farmers can confidently plan for profitability while ensuring their orchards remain productive for decades.
