The Right Way To Use Manure In Your Garden

Manure remains one of the most affordable and effective ways to boost soil fertility and crop yields. Rich in organic matter and nutrients, it enhances soil health and structure.

However, many farmers misuse it, applying it raw or excessively, leading to plant burns, poor nutrient absorption, foul odours, and wasted effort.

Kenneth Kabagambe, a commercial farmer from Nyabugorogoro village in Kyenjojo district, says timing and preparation are key.

“I always compost my manure for at least three months before applying it. Fresh manure is too strong and can damage roots,” he explains.

He uses cow dung mixed with dry plant matter and kitchen waste. Once broken down, he spreads it evenly around the base of his banana and coffee plants, but not too close to the stems.

Henry Sekyewa, an agronomist, warns against direct application of raw manure.

“Un-composted manure contains high levels of ammonia and pathogens. It must be well-rotted to avoid harming crops or spreading diseases,” he notes.

Sekyewa recommends applying manure during land preparation or before the rainy season to allow nutrients to seep into the soil gradually.

Imelda Kasi, a commercial farmer in Kawumu village, Luwero district, has her own system.

“I mix my manure with ash and dry leaves before use. It makes it less acidic and improves texture,” she says.

Imelda applies it in planting holes for vegetables and covers it with soil before transplanting seedlings.

When used properly, manure improves soil structure, increases water retention, and supplies vital nutrients. It’s not just a waste product, it’s a farming treasure.
