Tips For Successful Goat Farming

Goat farming is gaining popularity in Uganda due to its profitability, resilience to harsh conditions, and growing market demand for both meat and milk.

But while many farmers rear goats traditionally, only a few take the step to upgrade to a commercial level.

Experts and successful farmers say that commercial goat farming requires planning, investment, and the right knowledge.

Phoebe Kagambe, a successful goat farmer in Kyenjojo district, says upgrading to commercial goat rearing begins with a mindset change.

“You must treat it like a business. That means proper record keeping, investing in quality breeds, housing, and feeding,” she says.

Kagambe started with 10 local goats but now has over 100, including Boer crosses, which grow faster and fetch higher prices in the market.

Terezia Nsabimaana, another experienced commercial goat farmer, emphasises the importance of proper housing and health management.

“Your goats need shelter that protects them from cold, rain, and direct sunshine. Cleanliness is key to avoiding diseases like pneumonia,” she advises.

Nsabimaana also practices rotational grazing and supplements her goats with mineral blocks and legumes like lucerne.

Peter Mubiru, a veterinary doctor, urges farmers to deworm their goats regularly and vaccinate against diseases such as PPR (Peste des Petits Ruminants), goat pneumonia, and foot-and-mouth disease.

“Many farmers lose goats due to ignorance. Work closely with a vet and invest in proper treatment,” he says.

To succeed, farmers should also consider breeding programs, marketing strategies, and access to reliable markets. Commercial goat farming, when well-managed, can generate millions in profit annually and provide steady employment.

With growing demand locally and regionally, experts agree, goat farming is no longer for the backyard. It’s time to go commercial.
