Whether you are rearing cattle, goats, pigs, or poultry, ensuring your animals have access to clean drinking water is essential for their health, growth, and productivity. The design and hygiene of drinking centres can make a big difference on any farm.
Sabastian Ngambwa, a dairy cattle farmer in Zirobwe, says that many farmers overlook the importance of properly set up drinking centres, especially for free-range animals.
“Animals on pasture need accessible water throughout the day. If they have to walk long distances or drink from dirty water points, it affects their health and reduces milk or weight gain,” he says.
Ngambwa advises farmers to construct drinking troughs using concrete or plastic containers placed on raised ground.

“Avoid muddy areas or stagnant ponds. Water should be fresh, clean, and in shaded areas to keep it cool,” he adds.
Peter Mubiru, a veterinary doctor, stresses that hygiene is just as important as the water itself. “Contaminated water can spread diseases like foot-and-mouth, worms, and diarrhoea, especially in young animals,” he explains.
He recommends cleaning troughs daily and placing them in locations that are not easily contaminated by dung or feed.
Mubiru also highlights the importance of planning the location of the drinking centres. “Place them near feeding areas but not too close to where animals defecate or sleep. And for large herds, create multiple water points to avoid congestion and reduce stress among animals.”
