What It Takes To Build A Tourism Centre

Tourism is one of the fastest-growing industries in Uganda, offering vast potential for entrepreneurs who are willing to think creatively and invest wisely.

From cultural heritage to eco-tourism and farm experiences, visitors are increasingly looking for destinations that offer more than just scenic beauty. But what does it really take to build a successful tourism centre?

Experts say the starting point is having a clear and unique concept.

“A tourism centre must have a strong identity, something that sets it apart,” says Joan Kantu, a tourism development consultant.

“Whether it’s culture, adventure, or agro-tourism, your theme must be well defined and appealing to a specific audience.”

Another key requirement is infrastructure. A successful centre needs clean accommodation, access roads, water, power, and proper sanitation facilities.

“The comfort of the tourist should be a top priority,” Kantu says.

“Even if your centre is in a rural setting, invest in clean rooms, good food, and safety.”

Julius Bigabwa, the founder of Biglad Organic Training Centre in Kanyambeho, Fort Portal, has taken these principles to heart. His centre attracts tourists who are passionate about farming and organic living.

By combining agriculture and hospitality, Bigabwa has created an experience where visitors can learn about composting, milking cows, and harvesting vegetables, all while enjoying the beautiful backdrop of the Rwenzori region.

Marketing is another crucial piece of the puzzle. Experts advise using social media, partnerships with tour operators, and storytelling to build visibility.

“The way you package and promote your centre determines how many people come,” Kantu adds.

Community involvement is essential. Engaging locals not only creates jobs but also helps maintain cultural authenticity.

Bigabwa trains and employs youth from surrounding villages, ensuring the community benefits from every visitor.
