On any farm, movement of produce, manure, tools, and water is unavoidable. A wheelbarrow, though simple, remains one of the most indispensable tools for farmers.
Joseph Ayo, a vegetable farmer from Zirobwe explains that his work would be nearly impossible without one.
“Carrying water cans and harvested vegetables by hand is exhausting. With a wheelbarrow, I move twice as much with half the effort,” he says.
But instead of buying expensive imports, local farmers are discovering that they can make durable wheelbarrows at home or through local workshops.
According to Elemia Male, director of Kutegeragana Metal Fabricators and Designers, the process starts with choosing the right materials.
“Use strong steel sheets for the tray, a solid steel or hardwood frame, and a pneumatic wheel for smooth movement on rough ground,” he explains.
Proper welding and balancing are essential to ensure the barrow can carry heavy loads without tipping.
Male advises farmers to design wheelbarrows with slightly wider trays for bulkier items like bananas or maize, and reinforced handles for durability.
“A well-made wheelbarrow can last five years or more if maintained well,” he adds.
Charles Kato, who hawks vegetables in nearby trading centres, says a strong wheelbarrow doubles as both transport and display.
“I load my vegetables, wheel them to the roadside, and sell directly. It helps me earn a daily income without hiring transport,” he notes.
For farmers, investing in or making a sturdy wheelbarrow is more than a convenience, it saves time, reduces physical strain, and even opens small business opportunities. With the right design and materials, a homemade wheelbarrow becomes not just a tool, but a partner in building a productive and sustainable farm.
