When And How To Dip Your Animals

Controlling ticks and tick-borne diseases is one of the most important aspects of livestock management. One effective method is dipping, where animals are submerged in a chemical solution that kills ticks and other external parasites.

Yet, many farmers remain unsure about when and how often to dip their animals for maximum benefit.

Peter Mubiru, a veterinary expert, says the best time to dip animals is during the early morning or late afternoon, when temperatures are cooler. “Dipping during the hot midday hours can cause stress and even lead to collapse, especially in young or weak animals,” he explains.

He adds that the frequency of dipping depends on the season and tick infestation levels. “During the rainy season, when ticks are more active, farmers should dip their animals every two weeks. In the dry season, once a month is often enough, unless there is a heavy infestation,” Mubiru advises.

Lilian Rwomushana, a dairy farmer from Kyenjojo, says regular dipping has significantly improved her herd’s health. “We dip every two weeks, especially after rain. It keeps our animals healthy and reduces cases of East Coast Fever,” she notes.

Sabastian Ngambwa, a dairy farmer in Zirobwe, adds that he complements dipping with spraying calves, which are often too young to be submerged. “We use knapsack sprayers for the young ones and dip the adults. We also make sure not to feed them immediately before dipping, to avoid choking,” he explains.

Farmers are reminded to always use recommended acaricides, keep dipping tanks clean, and follow all manufacturer instructions. With proper timing and consistency, dipping remains a reliable and affordable way to keep livestock healthy and productive.
