For any serious dairy farmer, keeping cows healthy and productive goes beyond providing pasture. The way cows feed and drink directly affects their growth, milk yield, and general health.
One often overlooked but very important investment is the use of properly built feeding and drinking troughs.
According to Hood Kasirye, a dairy expert and director at Kasirye Breeders, troughs create order in the cowshed and reduce wastage.
“When cows feed directly from the ground, a lot of fodder and concentrates are trampled and wasted. With troughs, you ensure every cow has access to clean feed and water, which improves efficiency,” he explains.
Kasirye adds that troughs also help farmers to monitor how much each cow consumes, a critical step in managing both calves and mature animals.
Peter Mubiru, a veterinary doctor, emphasises the importance of hygiene.
“Cows are very sensitive to contamination. Dirty water or spoiled feed leads to infections, diarrhoea, and reduced milk production. Troughs should be cleaned daily to avoid the build-up of bacteria, algae, or parasites. This is even more important for calves whose immune systems are still developing.”
The size and design of a trough matter as well. Experts recommend that feeding troughs for mature cows be at least 60cm deep and wide enough for comfortable access, while calf troughs should be smaller but easy to reach.
Troughs can be made from concrete, plastic, or wood, depending on the farmer’s resources, but durability and ease of cleaning are key considerations.
Whether it is for water, silage, or concentrates, troughs are an affordable innovation that improves farm management, enhances animal welfare, and ultimately boosts productivity.
